Homelessness - our duty

View pages in this section

The Council has a legal duty to investigate your situation and to assist you.

What we must look at:

The law states that we have to determine whether or not an applicant is:

  • eligible for assistance and
  • homeless or threatened with homelessness and
  • in priority need and
  • not intentionally homeless and
  • has a local connection with the Maldon District

So we will invite you to attend a personal interview and if the answer is 'yes' to all of the above points, we will ensure that suitable temporary accommodation is provided for you until a permanent home can be found.

If you are accepted as a homeless household, the Council's duty could be met through either the private sector or through the housing waiting list: Gateway to Homechoice.

Social housing is in short supply and you may wait some time for a suitable home. We therefore advise you to continue searching for suitable accommodation in the private sector and we will assist you by providing a deposit guarantee bond and/or rent in advance, if appropriate.

If you require any further help or advice, please contact us.
