Scheduled Ancient Monuments
Scheduled ancient monuments
What is a scheduled ancient monument?
An ancient monument is a nationally important site that is statutorily protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Act 1979.
There are 19,000 entries in the schedule covering 35,000 sites throughout the country ranging from prehistoric standing stones and burial mounds to Roman forts and medieval villages. More recent structures include collieries and wartime pillboxes.
Who schedules the monuments?
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for implementing the 1979 Act in England and is advised by English Heritage.
Protecting our heritage
In the Maldon District we are privileged to have 20 scheduled ancient monuments from every historical period, from prehistory to the modern era, giving fascinating insight to our archaeological heritage.
A booklet has been produced by the conservation team called 'Scheduled Ancient Monuments in the Maldon District' and is available at the Maldon Tourist Information Centre.
