Renters’ Rights Bill – important information for landlords

The Government has introduced the Renters (Reform) Bill, which will bring in major changes to the private rented sector in England. Once the reforms are implemented, they will affect areas such as how tenancy agreements work, eviction processes and landlord responsibilities.

Some of the changes planned include the abolition of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions, a move to periodic tenancies with clearer possession grounds, a new Private Rented Sector Landlord Ombudsman, and a requirement for landlords to register with a private rented sector portal. These reforms are intended to modernise the system for both tenants and landlords, and are the biggest changes to renting law in decades.

We know there is uncertainty in the market and that not all landlords are familiar with current legislation. While Maldon District Council cannot provide individual legal advice to landlords, you can find up-to-date official information and guidance on the Government’s website here:

Please review these materials to understand how the proposed changes could affect your responsibilities as a landlord and keep an eye out for further updates as the reforms are introduced.
